Indian Airlines is the third largest enterprise operating in the aviation sector, after Indigo and Jet Airways, acquiring a market share of about 19%.it was founded in July 1930(as Tata Airlines), and commenced operation from 15th October 1932. Since then it has undergone many transformations with the objective of providing world class services to its passengers.
Foundation and Economic Significance
Prior to 2007, Air India and Indian Airlines functioned individually, under the ownership of Government of India. Air India operated on international long haul routes, whereas Indian Airlines was functional on domestic and international short haul routes. In Feb. 2011 both these companies were merged under the head of NICAL, now called Air India Ltd. Air India has its headquarters at New Delhi.
According to statistics of FY 2013/14 Air India generated revenue of Rs.143 billion and has an operating income of Rs.192 billion. Its net Income has been accounted to be Rs21 billion. Moreover it provides employment to 23,044 individuals (FY 2013/14).
